Heavy loads and heavy tails

چکیده
The present paper is concerned with the stationary workload of queues heavy-tailed (regularly varying) characteristics. We adopt a transform perspective to illuminate close connection between tail asymptotics and heavy-traffic limit in infinite-variance scenarios. This serves as tribute some pioneering results J.W. Cohen this domain. specifically demonstrate that reduced-load equivalence properties established for naturally extend limit.

Heavy Tails of Ols
Suppose the tails of the noise distribution in a regression exhibit power law behavior. Then the distribution of the OLS regression estimator inherits this tail behavior. This is relevant for regressions involving nancial data. We derive explicit nite sample expressions for the tail probabilities of the distribution of the OLS estimator. These are useful for inference. Simulations for medium ...
متن کاملHeavy Tails and Mixed Distribution Hypothesis
We outline the Mixed Distribution Hypothesis as a means to explain heavy tails in ...nancial time series. We discuss the hypothesis’ historical roots, and fully present the most popular, and original, form of the hypothesis and its implications for modeling asset returns. Original contributions and modern extensions are cited.
متن کاملTCP Congestion Control and Heavy Tails
Long-range dependence has been observed in many recent Internet traffic measurements. Previous studies have shown that there is a close relationship between heavy-tailed distribution of various traffic parameters and the long-range dependent property. In this paper, we use a simple Markov chain model to argue that when the loss rate is relatively high, TCP’s adaptive congestion control mechanis...
متن کاملDynamic Models for Volatility and Heavy Tails
The aim of this monograph is to set out a uni ed and comprehensive theory for a class of nonlinear time series models that can deal with distributions that change over time. The emphasis is models in which the conditional distribution of an observation may be heavy-tailed and the location and/or scale changes over time. The de ning feature of these models is that the dynamics are driven by the ...
متن کاملHigh Dimensions and Heavy Tails for NES
The family of natural evolution strategies (NES) offers a principled approach to real-valued evolutionary optimization by following the natural gradient of the expected fitness on the parameters of its search distribution. While general in its formulation, existing research has focused only on multivariate Gaussian search distributions. We address this shortcoming by exhibiting problem classes ...
